Intrinsically Disordered Proteins
About the Community
Founded in 2018, the ELIXIR Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDP) Community focuses on developing high-quality:
- Tools and Databases: These resources empower researchers to identify, analyse, interpret, and functionally characterise IDPs.
- Standards and Guidelines: The community establishes data-sharing standards and best practices for IDP biocuration, ensuring consistency and facilitating collaboration.
- Educational Materials: These resources provide researchers with the expertise to effectively analyse and curate IDP data.
Contribution of ELIXIR Italy
ELIXIR-IT provides crucial support to the IDP community through several initiatives:
- Cutting-Edge Databases: ELIXIR-IT develops and maintains key databases like DisProt, MobiDBi, and PED.
- Benchmarking IDP Predictions: the Italian node organizes the Critical Assessment of protein Intrinsic Disorder (CAID) challenge for a blind evaluation of IDP prediction methods.
- Promoting Knowledge Sharing: ELIXIR-IT offers training courses and guidelines to facilitate participation and dissemination of knowledge on IDPs.
- Integrated Resources: ELIXIR-IT integrates IDP resources like DisProt and MobiDBi with ELIXIR-CDR platforms like InterPro and UniProtKB facilitating seamless access for researchers.
- Standardizing IDP Terminology: In collaboration with other Consortia, the IDP Community helps maintain IDP-related Gene Ontology and Evidence and Conclusion Ontology terms
- Minimum Information Standard: ELIXIR-IT, along with HUPO-PSI, contributed the Minimum Information About Disorder Experiments (MIADE), which provides guidelines for unambiguously reporting IDP experiments.
Overall, ELIXIR-IT's contributions play a vital role in advancing IDP research by providing essential tools, resources, and promoting knowledge sharing within the scientific community.
