B1MGplus

The Beyond 1 Million Genomes plus (B1MGplus) project supports the creation of a European cross-border network for genomic and related clinical data, to improve healthcare outcomes through personalised medicine, research and evidence-based health policies.

B1MGplus provides coordination and strategic support to the 1+ Million Genomes (1+MG) initiative, a joint commitment by 25 EU Member States and Norway to enable secure and ethical access to genomic and clinical data across Europe. By fostering collaboration between countries, institutions and stakeholders, the project aims to accelerate the integration of genomics into healthcare systems and public health strategies.

The project contributes to the scale-up and long-term sustainability of the 1+MG initiative by supporting participating countries in developing a federated European genomics infrastructure through the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC). It also promotes the adoption of shared standards for metadata, data quality and software interoperability, ensuring reliable and harmonised genomic data exchange across borders.

B1MGplus further works to facilitate the implementation of genomics in healthcare delivery and policymaking by developing secure legal and ethical frameworks for data sharing, strengthening stakeholder collaboration and building sustainable governance models. Key activities include raising awareness among healthcare professionals, evaluating the maturity of genomics integration within healthcare systems, engaging citizens through dedicated outreach initiatives, and demonstrating the socio-economic value of genomic medicine.

In addition, the project supports the development of robust ontologies, metadata guidelines and sequencing practices that will underpin the future European genomic infrastructure, helping create a more connected and data-driven healthcare ecosystem across Europe.
